In January I posted Marriott’s Mega Bonus promo, just 2 stays needed for a free night certificate.( article link HERE). This could easily be done for 300-400 Zar per night at Protea Hotels in South Africa.

When I earned the certificate from 2 really cheap Protea hotels locally I wrote the next piece ( article link HERE ) about redeeming the free certificate at plush top of the range JW Marriott or SPG, however SPG has not yet been merged and remains a separate programme.

The free night certificate expires on 25 October and can be used at a category 1-5 Marriott brand. I opted to wait to burn it at a 5.

Hello JW Marriott Sahar in Mumbai – a new Category 5. Perfect timing and location.

Marriott’s app check in gives a time allocation of 4am, I don’t think any other competitor hotel has it this early or maybe its only for airport hotels? I selected this time as my flight landed 3am.

Upon getting the key I did get some gravel as hotel systems start at 7am, but the check in assistant got the night duty manager to allocate me a room instead of waiting for the clock and system to change date. Brilliant management discretion perks as an elite, so I basically got 2 nights off one night free certificate with all the meals and lounge access.

My online check in gave me the best room available as an upgrade – confirmed.

I cant recall if this rental was the Etihad or the Marriott promo code ( both websites have the miles or points per rental stipulated with different discounts) as they only post some weeks after to the account, however in a nutshell I rented a manual Toyota Corolla for R240 ( zar) for the day and I got upgraded to a automatic SUV Toyota Rav4 ( thank heavens as it fits my surfboard coffin perfectly inside without needing to tie it on the roof).

Infact, the agent assisting me told me he’ll gladly give me a Hyundai H1 bus if it was available and even went downstairs to check if they had stock and called his depot to see if they could bring one, but all were sold out.
