Maldives is all the same, right? No, one could’nt be more wrong. Afterall the main draw card for the islands are its blue waters, although some islands are void of this, so found yourself a good deal, best you check further.
Once you land at Male, check your connection to your resort either boat or seaplane thats included in the offer or you might be forking out $200 to $800 per way per guest to get to your destination.
Not all islands are Blue, some have seaweed / seagrass on most parts. Some resorts I’ve been to had the premium accommodation set in the greenies.. A few google maps searches and you would easily be able to tell what is coral and whats not.
Cringe !Seaweed / Seagrass galore with a even bigger eye sore behind: construction
Many islands have wave breakers to ensure smooth waters in parts of the lagoon, some resorts have these ugly risen up walls all over.
High rise wave breakers
Man Made Islands: if you not yearning natural beauty or have never been to an island (not the Beacon but the tropical ones) this might not affect you. Man made islands will mostly have the crushed shells type of sand, perhaps with some white power topped on, similar to ones in Dubai. They also wont have as vibrant snorkeling as reefs are all brought in or still developing ecosystems. Flown in palms are also strategically placed voiding that real Maldives -feel.

Around 2014 we posted on how easily obtainable First Class was (without needing to fly prior). We only had about 1500 newsletter subscribers back then and I know of only a handful who maxed this opportunity, many called bs slash impossible slash neverever on the articles until I wrote the full trip review 6months later putting theory into practical whilst spending nothing more than $20 / Zar 250 per way.
Then over the next few years we wrote how to max First Class by flying partner airlines prior with discounted business fares earning up to 4x the miles before elite bonuses and liased with our concierge members 1 on 1 on all of this the world over.
Come 2020 most 1st class flights are suspended but…
In our previous newsletter we touched on the big news of Canadian Aeroplan’s codeshare with Etihad, what was not known then was the good news Aeroplan had in store for its new program launch enabling easy mile earn potentials.
Family pooling – combine miles up to 7 family members
Rocketmiles bonuses.
This is the most interesting bit. We have covered previous 1st class flights how we have maxed these promos staying often at places where there are no branded hotels or are when they are no good (such as Sri Lanka, Reunion and outer islands of Seychelles such as Praslin, we even did a 1 night miles boost at this premium place HERE during our 14night paycation). This also works well with local stays as many countries only have domestic travel open.
There’s a double promo that one (or rather families) can take advantage of.
1. Earn 5,000 bonus miles or points at select properties on your first hotel booking . Offer HERE.
Book this promo first, do the 1 night stays x 7 members checking in and out repeat on the new members booking ea day and you should be up 35000 points.
2. Aeroplan member exclusive: Get 5,000 bonus miles. Offer HERE
Make 3 reservations, each for 2 nights or longer, and earn 5,000 bonus miles. Book hotels around the world, and the bonus miles will be sent straight to your account after your 3rd stay.
Same protocol, book the 2 night stays in ea members name and after the 3rd stay the account will be 70,000 miles richer.
There are heaps more changes such as:
Combine points and cash for flight or multiple flights (finally)
2021 Bookings
This reminds me alot of Etihad’s slider option below, where one can leverage cash to miles at a cheaper rate than buying the miles on promos.
Etihad slider option
Combine a paid fare and award flight.
Earn status on buying miles.
Share your status with friends and family, even if they not traveling with you (similiar to Hyatt’s top tier style ‘guest of honor’).
Stopovers for 5000 points. This parts a no-brainer for travelers who love to turn one a one city trip into a multi city or multi country trip.
3. United plans JNB route
United Airlines, one of the US big3 gave notice this week they plan to fly direct to Johannesburg soon.
This is big news because there will be a huge competition now for SAA for this direct flight to New York (Newark).
United has minimal taxes, expect to pay between $5.60 to $31.46 taxes per award ticket – even in business (SAA – even on Journeyblitz charges $200 per way)
United has launched dynamic awards, so using miles for domestic starts at 5k miles, Europe for 21k miles and Middle East 31k miles on Saver Awards – All with minimal taxes.
United will fly the latest Boeing 787-9 on this route. SAA has sadly returned their new leased planes while they get their funding together with only handful of older planes.
United has also given notice of 2 new destinations in Hawaii – Kona and Maui. I can wait to see the booking options on South Africa – Hawaii when its ready.
Soaking up some Hawaiian rays
Hey they also do Tahiti, so imagine being able to book Pape’ete. This should make Bora Bora heaps more affordable but not quicker (this is a long long flight schedule)
United is a Star Alliance member, so expect perks with holders of Voyager, Turkish, Lufthansa etc that would come in handy.
United has (for now) eliminated change fees and stand by fees.

Finally after many years of travel, the lockdown has enabled most savvy travelers to compare 3 straight months (thus far) of cost of living / staying home vs cost of being abroad and as you may know the former is more expensive, see when you travel using loyalty as an elitist all the perks equals savings, one wouldn’t need to run to the grocery store every day, nor pay cleaners nor electricity, elitists often get largest suites, even when staying free on points, lounge access that often comes with, laundry, 3 generous meals per day and unlimited drinks throughout, some come with the comps via butler services..
Even if you not staying free and pay your way as an elitist, eg I changed my last trip abroad to Saudi Arabia which made more sense ( & cents) to save the points booking a new hotel (costing me 13k points per night with 5th night free) and rather take up a cash rate of 340 SAR pn for 20 nights that included just about everything + more with regards to upgrades and food, the checkout yielded more back in points (yes more points) with elite bonuses + 2x points for a future trip (Waldorf Maldives at a easy 96k per night with 5th night free with no taxes ? vs their 2000 usd nightly rate ++taxes are of the best options).
Specials however, come and go, sometimes they repeat themselves, here are some unheard of ones that many seem to be taking advantage of:
2. Qatar promo.
Flexibility at its finest!
Ever seen something like this? To be honest what I love the most of this promo is how creative one can get in each of the valued flexibility points.
When Qatar launched this promo via email it put most savvys head in a spin, everyone hopped on the lowest business class tickets from 500$ short haul, eg CMB – MCT and change it to further away, remember here you can CHANGE YOUR DESTINATION as long as its 5000 miles radius (not km!), I wonder if they still allowing departure and arrival points for changes one after the other as they were initially?
No 2 Unlimited changes? so the swells not peaking in North Male Atoll but Bali will be going off on all cylinders for a surfers upcoming trip, sorted.
No 3 In theory how many book and cancels with 10% value added can one muster?
No 4 Swop for Qmiles. The rate is $1 spent per 100 Qmiles and valid for 3 years. Talk about a cheaper way to buy miles, unheard of? Note: usually 1000 Qmiles would cost $35 to buy.
Qatar in my own opinion has some of the most creative promos, remember their kids fly free promo ? I could book all 6 in my tribe to Istanbul return for Zar 18,000 !
Still on Qatar, now with Status!
Top Tier
Taken up QR’s amazing targeted promo that yields:
AL Maha meet and greet worth 400 Qar per person
100% bonus miles and 100% family miles
Business Lounge access + 5 Complimentary passes ( note: worlds best first class lounge ‘AL Safwa’ was taken off access for Platinums last year unless they flying in business or First)
Unique 60 Qcredits loaded – apart from miles Qatar’s premium elite status comes with Qcredits, one may use these Qcredits to upgrade from just about any class fare in Economy to Business or from any class fare from Economy to First Class ( you might recall a older post showing when they used to fly DOH-MED, the metal did not have a business cabin so all business flyers got coded as first class with access to the Al Safwa Lounge as well). Speaking of Al Safwa, using Qcredits should get you the access when upgrading from DOH. You can also use Qcredits to pay for fees and extra baggage (dont!) save them for flights out DOH that has the worlds only 1st class suites in business class named THE QSUITES, that has like 2 double beds facing each other for 4 pax, enough place for baby in middle too.
Another unheard of topic. 1st class Emirates now from $41. Most airliners seem to have been doing the same to stimulate travel with the lower oil prices. For EK fuel surcharge chart click HERE scroll left to pic no7
4. Etihad 50% bonus value.
Etihad also jumped on the ME3 bandwagon with a unique offer of their own this month, buy any travel voucher and get 50% value added.
5. Match made in Heaven.
WOW! Etihad and Air Canada sign code share agreement.. and for those in South Africa seem to be in the ‘goldilock zone’ to pick up avail into AUH and beyond. The trick to maxing Aeroplan is to how shall I say, SAA Journeyblitz it? find 2 segments separately then apply them A to B, B to C and then C to A. Need Aeroplan miles fast? see no 6 below.
Marriott uniquely transfers their Marriott Reward points to just about any airline miles program at a 3:1 rate (except Air new Zealand) with a added 25% bonus on all points transferred at 60k points thresholds.
Also, Marriott points are great for stays with elite 5th night free redemption’s at the worlds biggest hotel chain boasting 30 brands.
Hilton has a 100% points sale too, ends July 15th, click HERE.
Offcoarse not forgetting it rarely makes sense to buy points unless they are actually saving you money for superior use.
Using elite status would in certain events get you bulk of the points free with its bonus off stays.
It seems most websites of hotels are offering prepaid voucher with bonus value through all the major hotel brands. Do check them out if you are looking for any further deals ahead.
8. The A380 demise.
Air France has retired all their double decker A380’s after 10 years of service. Most airliners including Emirates, Qatar, Qantas and Etihad have also grounded them due to their high operational costs. Airbus will no longer be making A380’s. Sad to say in the next few years walking upstairs will be a memory of the past. Do you remember seeing your first A380 in 2010 and then flying on your 1st A380 trip?
9. Countries are opening up.
Europe has just unveiled their plan to open in July to certain countries.
Hawaii opens on August 1st.
Maldives opens up to everyone with no restrictions on July 15th.
Yes we used the offer in no 2 above and booked cheapest flight to Mumbai and changed it to most expensive flight into Male, not quite the maximum 5000 mile change flexibility, but as any traveler would know Maldives is of the most expensive airfares around.
I wonder if Charter flights would be allowed sooner from SA as we promoted bulk of last year and at the start of this year as Islands due to warm climates and open spaces with rooms distanced between each other on most resorts might just be the safest escape for those yearning.

The once mighty IHG Pointbreaks has officially died as of 31 January 2020. What was once the hotel industry’s most economical ( un-matched and un-rivalled) promotion as 200+ hotels ( out of 4900 +) went for a redemption rate of a mere 5000 points regardless of what the normal points reward rates were per night.
Brands like Intercontinental, Crowne Plaza’s and Holiday Inn’s were usually snapped up in minutes for free at 5000 points per night at destinations like Maldives, Tahiti, Vietnam, India South America, Mauritius, Saudi Arabia and heaps of others.
Truly this promo was one of the most exiting lists every quarter. When traveloyalty.com started many years back these destination lists use to dictate which countries are next that we are going to book and score free.
Indeed we maxed it through all the premium ones, one property in Saudi Arabia in particular for over 100 nights, and at times with 2x rooms booked, all for free, 20 to 25 nights a time that came with lounge access and breakfasts.
Even if you did not have enough points you could then buy them / manufacture them for 23$ per night, IOW you could use Zar 120,000 to stay in the worlds top brands for 1 full year if you did not have the points to do it for free. Im sure you know people who spend that kind of cash on 1 single trip and get nothing back? or lets say you sold your 12 million Rand house you could stay free for 100 years around the world.
IHG started to change Pointbreaks about a year back after some months of lackluster properties being featured, made sense as Pointbreaks became so popular, remember 6 to 7 years back when hardly anyone knew of it? and they would not even sell out. Pointbreaks? say what? Patrick Swayze? would be asked (no not that one with Keanu)
Properties now had become 5k, 10k or 15k per night on the promo, but even in that too, properties and resorts were not of the premium grade many had become accustomed to.
I cant even recall when last I stayed on a Pointbreak, was it the one in Turkey’s capital or the one in Muscat? Didnt matter.
Recently I had my last 100k of IHG points (earned points, it often makes no sense to buy points as at top tier level as you earn them for free with bonuses in chunkloads), so when I got a hold of the property that I stayed at more than 100 nights they told me of many changes IHG has allready implemented on them for the negative, we knew this was coming but usually management discretion often overrides these for top tier members. Gone were the lounge access and free breakfasts, gone were the upgrades too.
I looked into the more expensive Intercontinental across the way that many have said is premium, well the only thing premium was the points per night rate at 30k ( everything else from lifts to rooms was an eye opener) never in my life have I layed out that many points for a free night, yet alone 3x. We got the upgrades and the free breakfast as top tier in this brand that the former hotel started refusing, I brought this up with them and IHG head office, who will hopefully look into this situation and remedy a new kick start soon. # watch this space

3. Whats really good in South Africa?
We recently took a Zar 25,000 in value SA road trip for FREE using loyalty. Expiring miles = easy trip.
I suppose you can hear complaints about every country especially from media influence to its citizens, South Africa is no different, one will often hear about the Government, how poor service delivery is, prevalent crime, fuel hikes, the exchange rate that just when it starts to show signs of healing gets pummeled often by external factors etc, the list can go on but I’ll tell you what really flippen rocks on the shores of SA ( and I’m not only talking waves..)
Full Service Hotels from 5k per night on points ( its going to be 4k with off peak): Marriott, the largest hotel group in the world and the largest in SA has a huge amount of decent hotels with rates as low as this, few years back when Protea was just taken over basically all were 7500 points per night. These are scattered all over SA and are great to visit city to city during a road trip. Consistently we been scoring 2bedroom suites to Presidential duplex suites. It gets a bit better, the transit hotels are a blessing on the low point rates ( vs high cash rates) for those odd time flights in and out.
Car rental, ever seen how low miles are with unlimited mileage. Recently we used expiring Etihad miles, we got a Compact sedan category for a mere 2500 miles per day all incl with unlimited, promoted via Europcar on the airlines website, this with our top elite status got us upgrades to a automatic 7seater Avanza on trip one and then the most wanted / holy grail of car upgrades – a Bus catergory, Hyundai H1 for the next trip. (We love Bus category upgrades for the size and comfort, have scored it in Morocco Jan18, Turkey March18, Durban June18)
Breakfasts at Nandos, just $2.50, I dont think anywhere else in the world you could get such a tasty start to you day for such a low price, great for those early flights in or out cities and airports.
and yes, waves. SA is absolutely blessed with consistent and perfect surf, I cant vouch that its absolutely uncrowded but when compared to other places in the world, SA surfers are spoilt, amazingly each city on our shores are dotted with some of the best waves with the highlight being Jeffreys Bay, known to have the worlds best right hand pointbreak. I agree.
Follow recent trip posts with pics on Instgram HERE on how we maxing expiring airline miles for car rentals with upgrades to accommodation.

A question that cannot be answered in just a one liner, but if I had to try, the answer would be: because its way better!
Way better in what way(s) one might ask? Well for starters lets put that down in point form:
Its cheaper, way way cheaper. Gone are the days and mindset that over paying a per person rate for a package is the way to travel. Accommodation has always been booked per room in any event since as far back as my travel memories take me. Personally I have not been on a Umrah package since 1998 and in 2012 prior to traveloyalty.com I went on Umrah backpack style saying in the cheapest (furthest accom for under 50 Riyal per night at the border of 1st Ring Road Madinah and Ajyad in Makkah. Come 2013 with Traveloyalty.com we stayed free on two trips through Hilton Towers in Makkah and Crowne Plaza Madinah, all on points. Heaps closer and heaps better especially for families. This trip would be the kickstart to our future articles and inspiring thousands on staying free even through peak Ramadhaan where most were paying Zar 250,000 and getting zilch back on checkout.
Stay longer through visa validity. You not limited to X-amount days and nights if you not on a package. Visas are valid 30days upon entry to the Kingdom, like most visas they have a fee attached for the full validity period regardless, in this you could maximise the 29 x nights / 30 days validity.
Investment for akhira… and dunya. When you book direct your trip now becomes one that you can earn back points for future free hotel nights. 3rd party bookings are null and void of any earn back and perks.
Perks through Traveloyalty.com in #theTLway, this saves you even more and this alone needs its own chapter, most of which are mentioned in the YouTube video next in the description but just to highlight, food savings by way of lounge access, early check ins and late check outs ( thats like 2 free nights), 2nd adult stays free, upgrades, free breakfast for room, even open complimentary menu’s, all of this has been mentioned many times since 2013, however daily new travelers are discovering the power of loyalty and best of all…
Bonus points. Most never knew that they could earn bulk if not more of their spend back in this alone.
Its easy, super easy. It takes about 20 seconds to make a booking on the hotels app.
Family travel perfected. Thank heavens the locals have large families and in this the hotels are super lenient to those who worry about having to lay out extra person charges and extra rooms in packages.
Flights. Here one can book any way, regardless, be it miles, cash on 3rd party or a find on skyscanner or Ita Matrix. Flights are the easiest part.
Transfers. There are all too many taxis from H1’s to GMC’s to sedans to vans outside airports and hotels that you can negotiate a price with per family not per person.
Yearn for a repeat trip? You will be super pleased you saved mega bucks on last trip incase of the Visa penalty.
DIY travel has worked for hundreds of people you know, theres no reason why it will not work for you!
2. Umrah Diy 29x nights. YouTube. Paid R9500 in Business and R5500 in Economy.
How we have maximised the blessings of miles and points since traveloyalty.com’s inception over the years, well not so much on the miles sector as yet as we have taken most of the cash specials in Business class or the discounted ways in economy by adding another city or country into the itinerary making it a “open jaw”, such as Morocco and Oman, at the same time earning close to 300,000 miles towards future trips. Book at least 3 consecutive nights* at participating resorts in Southeast Asia, Korea and Maldives from now until 31 August 2019. Valid for stays between 16 August 2019 and 20 December 2019.
Note: IHG will be switching to dynamic award pricing by the end of 2019, so don’t hold on to your points as they may have minimal value in peak times when cash rates are high. How will this affect Pointbreaks is yet to be seen…
6. Marriott Rewards.
The New Award Chart kicks in 14 September 2019. Look forward to off-peak redemption rates! If you have your eye on a peak time property best book it now prior to the change.
